Theater Aventino
The first theater in Palena was located in Largo dei Capitoli, near the ancient convent of San Francesco: in 1812 it was in need of renovation and therefore was equipped with a real stage.
In 1831 the reverend missionary fathers of the Virgins of Naples urged the closure of this theater, whose location clashed with the sacredness of the Franciscan convent: the Palenese community was left without a place intended for theatrical performances for over a decade.
In 1843, under the aegis of the mayor Gaetano Falcocchio, the construction of the new theater of Palena began, located along Via Matonata, now called Corso Umberto I: a bitter controversy arose within the municipal administration between those in favor and against to this operation; a circular of 1847 which forbade the construction of new theaters is grafted on to the controversy. The construction site in via Matonata was almost complete and so the circular is bypassed by changing the building’s intended use in the warehouse, but continuing with the theater project already started.
